MARY CUNLIFFE

Techniques

A variety of techniques are used, including coil, slab, press molding and hand built.  The forms are sculptural and ‘tight’ in their design, whereas in contrast the smoke firing and raku finishes are organic and unpredictable.

The colours and tactile qualities are created by smoke firing using hay, holly leaves, pine needles, eucalyptus bark, vine trimmings, seaweed and natural oxides, all sourced from the local environment.

The finish is achieved by placing the ceramic piece within a reduction chamber of the combustible materials. It is then set alight, lid placed on and just left to burn and smoulder...there is no control on the final result. The smoke firing does the work resulting in the creation of something exciting and spontaneous.
